It was good that Thor stated this wasn't Thanos because Loki might have been tempted to flee right then and there. It seemed that he still had some grace period before the Titan arrived, though, so this might be a worthwhile way to kill some hours. He would like to leave Thor and the Asgardians with a positive image of him, in order to counteract the hatred they would feel after he left them to die.
