Al is as gentle as possible when he lifts Ed off the ground. He wishes he could feel the weight of him, the heat of his body, anything at all. But he can't. And he knows that he, in return, won't be a comforting or comfortable figure for Ed to rest against, all cold and sharp angles.
So he puts him in the bed as soon as possible and oh-so-carefully tucks the sheets up around him to make sure he's warm.
"Me either." His voice is low and sad. "I think it must be because you hit your head in the-- when you got hurt. It's probably not permanent, you just need a day or two to rest and then you'll start to remember."
He really hopes that's true. He's got no way of knowing if it is, but surely Ed couldn't just forget about him. Not forever.
