The thing with Steve, he was a simple guy to get along with. He usually meant exactly what he said, he liked to treat people with respect, and he didn't play games with people's emotions. Which is why he'd got tired of being used as the metaphorical punching bag for Tony's issues.

It didn't mean that everything had to be ruined between them forever, just that Tony had to take a look at himself and figure out where his priorities were.
